The Inner Glow: Benefits of Kundalini Yoga

People often arrive at Kundalini Yoga, perhaps for something, and sometimes they don’t even know what that is. Usually what they find is much deeper. Kundalini Yoga is a whole-being practice for mind, body, and spirit and creates beautiful roles throughout your life.

Energy and Vitality

First off, you are likely to have an excessive experience of energy and vitality. Consider this as wiping out all the dust of your energy to free the vital force that resides within you. This is not a wired, caffeine-fueled energy. It is a strong, sustained energy that improves your ability to live your day with vim.

Stress Reduction

Then, the stress reduction and emotional balance are extraordinarily noticeable benefits of Kundalini Yoga. Everybody today is living on the edge of stress, so who wouldn’t want a little more peace in their lives? Kundalini Yoga offers you breathing techniques in conjunction with specific movements to directly interact with your nervous system. And you will let go of anxiety and form a sense of inner, grounded emotional stability. Many of our students share the greatest sense of stress relief that can be imagined. The relativity of your experience of pure stress is unbelievably liberating and freeing in its support of your growth and development.

Mental Stability

And when does it come to your mind? Get ready for mental stillness and focus. If you constantly feel scattered or struggle to concentrate, then Kundalini practices could help snap you back into the moment. It can clear out the meshes of thoughts in your head. And help you refocus your mind to be present in everything you do.

Spiritual experience

Aside from the obvious benefitting factors, there is a beautiful experience of spiritual and personal change and harmony. This practice will take you gently down a road of reflection, awareness, connection, and intention. One that taps you into a reality and purpose that is greater than just your own.

Better Physical Health

The physical benefits are a great bonus too. Improved circulation, better flexibility, and a little more awareness of your own capacity as a human body. Real gifts of Kundalini Yoga arise as we consciously learn to know our own potential. The keys to what we have not yet revealed.

It’s all about the Kriya: Kundalini Yoga Pose.

Now, when you hear the words “yoga pose,” you probably see yourself in a fully drawn or elegant Warrior II. Or perhaps you see yourself not doing Down Dog for the 10th time in a row. In Kundalini Yoga pose, we talk more about “Kriyas” instead of individual “poses.”

A kriya is like a recipe; it is a set sequence of postures. Breathing techniques (pranayama), hand gestures (mudras), eye focus, and perhaps some mantra (chanting) in a specific way to bring. A certain energetic effect.

It’s not about remaining in one pose for a long time. It is about the synergistic nature of everything working together to manifest and direct your inner energy. Each kriya has a distinct purpose to support your body and mind. Whether it’s to refresh and calm your nervous system, balance your glands, or clear your subconscious mind.

For example, you may frequently see Breath of Fire, a rapid, rhythmic breathing exercise that is highly uplifting and purifying. Or you may see Sat Kriya, a foundational practice that involves chanting and rhythmic movements that gently awaken the navel point.

Simple movements, such as spinal flexes, may appear to be intended to activate your energy body, or Kundalini energy, up your spine. The magic is in the integrated process, combining breath, movement, and sound in one practice, and this is what makes Kundalini a powerful practice because it all works together synergistically.

Taking the Plunge: Is Kundalini Yoga Ok for Beginners?

This is one of the most common questions we are asked, and the answer is YES! Kundalini Yoga is accessible to beginners. You don’t need to be super flexible, do yoga previously, or be able to sit in a lotus position for hours. That is the beauty of Kundalini.

Many of the kriyas are quite simple and can be adapted to meet your own body’s needs. The emphasis is not on difficult physical perfection; it is on what you experience.

As a beginner

It is essential to learn from a certified and experienced teacher who can safely lead you through the practices and help you to experience the subtle energetic changes.

A Path Less Traveled (But Equally Rewarding):

Difference Between Yoga and Kundalini Yoga?

That’s an interesting question, because Kundalini Yoga is a style or type of yoga that has its own distinct flavor compared to other popular styles like Hatha and Vinyasa. Think of “yoga” as a really big, beautiful tree, and the styles as unique branches of the tree.

Below are some conventional ways that we see Kundalini Yoga having a different flavor:

  1. Primary Intention: In almost all other styles of yoga, the primary intention is to practice physical postures (asanas) to build strength, flexibility, and physical well-being. While those benefits are popular in Kundalini Yoga, the fundamental purpose is specific: to bring out the hidden Kundalini/serpentine energy at the base of the spine and develop consciousness! Kundalini Yoga emphasizes the energetic effect of the pose rather than the asana itself.

  • Approach: Instead of holding asanas individually as you would in other styles of yoga, Kundalini Yoga is a series of kriyas—those specific, sometimes dynamic or repetitive sets of techniques. Kriyas are the complete package of movement, breath, mantra, and meditation, with the intention to produce an intended energetic effect. Other styles often transition seamlessly through a series of individual asanas in a flow of movement.

  • Breath and Sound: While breathwork or pranayama is foundational in all yoga, it is a large focus of almost every personal practice in Kundalini Yoga, including some techniques (such as Breath of Fire) that are a key part of the majority of practices. Mantra, or chanting, is also an integral part of most Kundalini classes, and it will transition you into altered states of consciousness and changes of energy more often than you might expect in other styles of physical yoga.

  • General Flow and Dynamics: In Kundalini Yoga, with more movements that are more dynamic and repetitive, maybe held for specific periods, the movement can feel different and faster than some of the slower held postures and endless or flowing movements in Hatha or Vinyasa Yoga.

  • Spiritual Connection: Although all yoga is rooted in spirituality, Kundalini Yoga is often perceived as the most significant path to spiritual awakening and realization of self through the consistent use of meditation and connecting with your higher self.

Recognizing that neither form of yoga is “better” than the other, they serve as different journeys leading to greater well-being and life improvement. There is tremendous value in attempting both!
